INDIA, January 2013: Senator Asha Seth led her second visit to India to engage members of the Indian government to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Canada.
Senator Seth represented the Senate of Canada at the important cultural and economic summit known as Pravasi Bhartiya Divas as a member of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) trade delegation to Kochi, Kerala, She presented an official greeting from Prime Minister Harper to the Hon. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala.
The Hon. Jason Kenney, Canada’s Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, joined the Canadian delegates and hosted a luncheon for the Indian representatives where Senator Seth spoke along with the Mayor of Brampton, Susan Fennell and Mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti . Minister Kenney and Senator Seth lauded the positive role of the ICCC in fostering bilateral relations between Canada and India and also proactively engaging the Indian Diaspora into the social, cultural and economic fabric of Canada.
In the days that followed, the Non-Resident Indian Institute in Delhi honoured Senator Seth with its prestigious 25th Silver Jubilee Memento for her contributions to the development of India.
At the 6th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor’s Summit in the city of Ahmadabad, Senator Seth had the great pleasure to meet with the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, to promote Canadian trade interests in the region. Canada was a major sponsor of this event and Senator Seth a presented official greetings from Prime Minister Stephen Harper to the Hon. Narendra Modi and all attending the Vibrant Gujarat summit.
After much success in Gujarat, Senator Seth continued onto Patna, Bihar, where she was invited by the Hon. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, to attend a private meeting at his residence. The meeting followed up on issues discussed by High Commissioner Stewart Beck and CM Kumar in 2012 including trade, energy, and international cooperation.
In conclusion of the trip, Senator Seth travelled to her birth state of Uttar Pradesh for a symposium at her alma mater, King George’s Medical University. Senator Seth was invited by the Hon. D.K. Gupta, Vice Chancellor of King George’s Medical University, and the Executive Council to speak at the historic Brown Hall and discuss research and education exchange opportunities between Canada and India.
This marked the second official visit to India by Senator Asha Seth since her appointment in 2012. The events and meetings were successful in expanding and enriching the bilateral cultural and commercial relations in the most important states of India.
